Body Language, Eye Contact

Eye Contact
Eye contact is very important as it tells the other person that you are interested in what they have to say, and that you are giving them your full attention. Eye contact can tell you if a person likes you, or if they are nervous around you. If they are nervous or do not like you, they will only look at you about 40% of the time. 60 to 70% eye contact is favorable, and indicates interest and attention.

When you are communicating your message, try to maintain a comfortable level of eye contact. This will give an impression of confidence and credibility to what you are saying. People who avoid eye contact are seen to have something to hide, having a lack of self confidence or self esteem.

If you have trouble maintaining eye contact because it makes you feel uncomfortable, you can focus on the skin between the eyebrows, just above the bridge of the nose. It will appear that you are looking directly into the person's eyes.

It is very important to maintain eye health as well. Your eyes are an important method of communication, so they should be bright, clean and healthy. Tired, yellow eyes can indicate poor circulation, liver problems or poor diet.

Body Language

Did you know that body language can be a more powerful form of communication than the spoken word? It can signal confidence, friendliness, nervousness and more. People can look at your body language and make inferences about your character. What is your body language saying about you?

If you want to enhance your ability to communicate successfully with others, you will need to pay more attention to what you are saying unconsciously with your body.

Your Face
If you are facing someone squarely, you are giving them your full attention. Eye contact is very important. If you are looking to the side or turning your body away from someone, you are giving them the sign that you are disinterested and your attention is elsewhere.

This can be very insulting and frustrating and will leave a negative impression of you. If you notice someone you are talking to giving you these same signals, it is time to change the conversation to something more interesting!

You can show interest by nodding to show that you agree, or by tilting and lowering your head and eyebrows to show that you are thoughtfully considering what they are saying.

A smile can go a long way! It says that you like the person and that you are happy, warm and confident. These are all keys to making that great first impression. By animating your face, you are using a visual form of communication that accounts for nearly 55% of your message.
